Tin Can Mummy Family

At our house we go through a lot of canned foods. My kids love canned fruit and I love to serve green beans and corn with many meals, so we always have an abundant supply of empty cans. I saw some really cute crafts made with tin cans, but with a shortage of time, I decided to go with something fast and easy.

 

I used crepe paper, hot glue and some wiggle eyes and these guys were done in less than 10 minutes. These were so easy that even my kids can make some.

Paper Mache Pumpkin Topiary

I first saw pumpkin topiaries just after Halloween 2009. I knew right away that I wanted to make them the next year for our front porch. I had no idea the foam pumpkins were as pricey as they are (even with sales or discounts, 6 of them really added up). I never found pots or urns within my budget, either. So, I put that project on hold...at least for another year. Then, back in June, I found these awesome urns for $3.00, at the grocery store! Suddenly, pumpkin topiaries were in my head again and I began thinking of a cheap alternative to the foam pumpkins. Here is my finished topiary. I made with the pumpkins with newspaper, flour, and water (aka paper mache).

 This is how I made the pumpkins (except I used newspaper as filler instead of plastic bags).  It was time consuming, but I figured it was worth it (at least that's what I kept telling myself). Mine didn't turn out smooth enough to paint, so I decided to follow the trend and use Mod-Podge and fabric to cover them. The fabric was left over from a quilt I never finished started and the colors were perfect for fall. I bought some silk leaves and hot glued them between the layers. The toppers were left over from another project. I filled the pots with rocks and stuffed them with hay. They are under a covered porch, but I still might spray them with a protective finish.

Each topiary cost less than $5.00. But, best of all, they are done!

Easy Pumpkin Candle Holders

I picked up a few more candle holders from Dollar Tree to make these cute pumpkin candle holders. All it took was some paint, faces (cut from vinyl), and some green ribbon.

 Quick, easy, and cheap! Less than $5.00 for all three.

Burlap Ghost Lights {PB Knock-Off}

I was looking for some Halloween inspiration and came across these cute ghost lights from Pottery Barn.

Here is my knock-off version! Aren't they cute?

The hardest part of this project was figuring out what to use for the head. I searched online and found these clear plastic ornaments that were perfect.

I drilled a 3/8" hole in the bottom of each ornament. They serparate, so I drilled the hole in the middle of the two pieces.

Since most of the ghosts I know are white *wink*wink*, I decided to go with off-white burlap rather than the brown Pottery Barn used. I cut it into 11" squares and stacked them on top of each other.

 I took one square and wrapped it around the ornament and drew eyes with a marker.

 Then, I placed the square back on the pile and used the back of a paintbrush to paint over the marker. 

Some of the paint should go through to square underneath, which is perfect because it marks where the eyes go on the next square. Repeat until all the eyes are painted.

I found a strand of lights (I painted the wires cream because I only had green) and poked a light through the center of the burlap. I wiggled it around to make the hole bigger and stuck the light through to the back.

I placed the light in half the ornament,

added the other half,

and tied a piece of twine around the neck.

And now I have some really cute lights for Halloween.

 

They're just as cute when they're not lit up.

Frosted Glass Halloween Candle Holders

I was at Dollar Tree a few weeks ago and picked up a couple glass candle holders. For only $1, I couldn't pass them up. I made these for Halloween.

My kids think they are pretty cool (I kind-of think so, too).

They were quick and easy to make. I found the images online and cut them out with my vinyl cutter (you could do the same thing with contact paper and a craft knife). I put the vinyl on the glass, sprayed them with Valspar Frosting Spray, and carefully removed the vinyl after they had dried.

Here is what they look like without a candle.

I actually had the paint already so they only cost me a buck each. They would also be super cute filled with goodies and wrapped in cellophane.
