Weathered Beach House Sign

Since the 4th of July is over (and has been for over a month), I decided it was about time to switch out the decorations in our seasonal shelf. I thought this time I would go with a nautical beach theme. Problem was (just like patriotic decor), I had nothing to display. So, the past few days I have been crafting like crazy to get some projects done. Here is the first project I finished.
This sign started out as a weathered board on a pallet. I took it home and roughly cut it down to size.
Then I sanded and glued the pieces together.
I (well, I and my little helper) painted it with watered down black paint
and then applied a two coats of light blue/gray paint.
I used my vinyl cutter to make a stencil. It took a bit of time to get it to stick, since the wood was so rough. But, eventually, I got it to stay put.
I painted one good coat of white spray paint and sanded it. I probably could have stopped here, but, I wanted it to look way more weathered.
So, I started applying black paint in random sizes and places.
Then, I applied another stencil, spray painted again, and gave it one more rough sanding.
And then I happily displayed it on the shelf.
because that is one project down!
Obviously, had I originally known I wanted such a weathered look, I would have painted the black before I stenciled at all. Then, I would have only had to stencil once. But, I didn't know, so I got to stencil twice!
Now, I'd better hurry and finish the rest of the projects before summer is over and I have to switch to a new theme.
