Swirly Butterfly

I wanted to make something bright and colorful for my front door and I wanted it to be something that could stay up 'til summer. I thought a butterfly would be a fun project to try. So, I got to work creating my design.

I started by cutting out and sanding the pieces of the butterfly. Then, I drilled some small holes for the wire that will hold it together.

Next, I painted the center green and the wings pink (this is the color that the swirls will be)

Then, I applied my vinyl stencil.

It actually looked pretty cute just like this...I could have just trimmed the vinyl around the edges and stopped there.  But, I wanted something a little brighter, so I continued with my original plan and painted a bright pink over the top.

After the paint dried, I removed the vinyl stencil.

Since my cutting wasn't perfect, I figured I would distress it just a little bit.  I think this hides some of the flaws. So, I sanded around the edges and lightly over the top.

I cut five pieces of floral wire and threaded them through the holes.  Then I used a pencil to make the curly ends.

Now I have a bright and colorful door decoration to last through the spring.
